Project Description

Enter one of Britain’s finest Georgian town halls, with its fine collection of civic treasures and artwork…

Recognised as one of the finest Georgian town halls in the country, Newark Town Hall has accommodated the Major and the Town Aldermen since is was built in 1776.

Rooms within the working Town Hall form part of the museum and house a fine collection of civic treasures. Visitors can tour the imposing Council Chamber, Mayor’s Parlour and elegant Assembly Room, which was restored in 1990 to its former 18th Century splendour.

On the second floor is a delightful gallery, overlooking the historic market place. The fine art collection on display includes a variety of paintings, drawings and sculptures by local and international artists such as William Nicholson, Stanley Spencer, Robert Kiddey and William Cubley. Art lovers can also enjoy the Spotlight Gallery, which houses a broad range of exhibitions by local artists and community groups.

As a family-friendly museum, there truly is something for everyone to explore – with quizzes and trails, interactive touch screens and dressing up boxes with mini mayoral robes!
